The tragedy of the commons is that under capitalism we don’t have one.
How AI can be an "online WMD" to wipe out the commons by @…: « the internet moved from self-governance by members of the commons to acts of wanton destruction committed by despicable, greedy assholes who shit in the well over and over again.»
The example of copyleft trolls using Creative Commons to destroy the commons seems timely when CC itself keeps waiving the "AI is fair-use"-flag…

I haven't used stackoverflow much, just had two answers I'd posted there. I deleted them both, and got the same email others have got.. Probably the most passive-aggressive email I've ever received.
By the way if you delete your account, they anonymise your posts. AFAICT, that's against the creative commons attribution share-alike license of the posts.

A private citizen will be punished for contempt of Parliament by the Canadian House of Commons by being "called to the bar" and admonished by the Speaker.
The guilty party is some CEO of some company that got a favourable contract for the ArriveCan app.

In the wake of the xz exploit, I quipped, “Free software, eh, fine, whatever. What does •sustainable• software look like?”
I haven’t heard anybody give a more thoughtful or more useful answer to that question than @… in this blog post, which has not one but •two• crucial insights:

OK. Where are the rings?
We left them with the little islanders from Asia.
It's always the help, in the library, with a lead pipe.
Recently @… pointed out again how the "tragedy of the commons" was originally a lie invented to have a pretense to take things away from people.
It's particularly enfuriatingly ridiculous that - you can bet on it - the people who will sell you this argument are also those who will tell you to prevent the climate catastrophe by uploading fewer…

A decentralized communications technology that does not depend on routing digital packets through a physical network of towers, gateways, microwave beams, and optical fibers. The text to be transmitted is encoded with a multiband frequency/amplitude modulation scheme, transmitted by molecular density waves, and decoded with a pair of miniaturized spectral filter banks implanted under the receiver's skull. "the internet was “an architecture for permissionless innovation”…
However, the next generation of innovators to benefit from this freedom—Google, Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft, Apple et al—saw no reason to extend it to anyone else. The creative commons of the internet has been gradually and inexorably enclosed, much as agricultural land was by parliamentary acts from 1600 onwards in England."
Interesting. I was introduced to The School of Thought website which is meant to engage users into critical thinking on conspiracy theories, misinformation, and fallacies, etc.
Anyone use this? Thoughts?

When I want my mind blown, I compare former world's largest supercomputers to the tech I have around.
ASCI Red, the world's fastest supercomputer until the year 2000, was 150m² large, consumed 850,000W of power …and was slower than an iPhone 14 Pro, which uses ~6W.
ASCI Red had over 1TB of RAM, which may still sound impressive, except that RAM was 2× slower than the iPhone's 1TB SSD.

I'm rereading the works of Wilkie Collins chronologically. I first read them in my twenties, when I didn't understand capitalism and slavery at all, having been lied to by teachers for my entire life to that point. I loved the books unproblematically then, but now the political dimension oppresses my attention.
These people all have servants because they enclosed the commons and made it illegal not to have a job. Their income comes ultimately from slave labor in the colonies. T…
so, there is this this space filling curve called a Gosper curve, which got some neat property like forming a fractal island that can tile the plane.

What's the end goal? What's the best way to enrich the Commons? The best way to preserve and move Free Culture forward? How do we win this war?

Apart from an example of when the members of the Commons are insane, last night's debacle showed that you cannot draft a motion, a resolution, on a ceasefire and give due attention to the harms and rights on both sides to the satisfaction of all.
It would require a different kind of process, one which doesn't take place in the House but could in the Committees and Subcommittees and their Working Groups. It still wouldn't satisfy everyone but it might be sane.
RT: @NicolaSturgeon
The House of Commons reduces itself to farce because even on an issue as serious as the situation in Gaza, the Westminster establishment can’t bring itself to rise above hostility to the SNP.
Proud of my @theSNP colleagues but deeply depressed by the state of UK ‘democracy’. #CeasefireNOW

Yeah, you're really gonna see which companies are just gonna allow the AI to scrape all their stuff now. I'm a copyleft/creative commons kinda guy. But if you have art that you don't want stolen, the answer is simple.

Back in 2014 they supported Polish diacritics and the writing style for a license summary sounded way better than the current version.

"The climate and ecological crisis truly is a Tragedy of the Non-Commons. Not only because those who are responsible for it suffer the least, those least responsible the most—an overwhelmingly huge injustice—but also because those who have power are the least well equipped and inclined to truly change things, whilst those who could offer the most in finding different ways of living are excluded and marginalised."

Hey friends, I'm itching to make a website to re familiarize myself with web tech. I have written some pretty advanced stuff in the past, but that was many years ago now. I'd love to create a huge library of Creative Commons works, something like the Free Music Archive, but bigger and better. Perhaps I can teach myself how federation works?
Sigh. I guess that's what Funkwhale is for. I don't see how I could make my website unique.
@… Somehow I suspect "pour the Internet into a large language model with no definition of quality" isn't part of building a knowledge commons.
Today I was looking for an image of a person being carried on a sedan chair, to illustrate an article I'm writing. When I did a search on on Adobe Stock for "sedan chair", it showed me dozens of pictures of people picking up garbage, and a few pictures of kittens, and nothing else. I found this completely baffling.
Next I went to search the Wikimedia Commons. And it was there I was reminded that another word for "sedan chair" is "litter".
