Operators and traders should be bound by the obligations under this Regulation regardless of whether the making available on the market takes place through traditional or online means. This Regulation should therefore ensure that in every supply chain there is an operator within the meaning of this Regulation who is established in the Union and can be held accountable in the event of non-fulfilment of the obligations under this Regulation. Traders should be responsible for collecting and keeping information to ensure the transparency of the supply chain of relevant products which they make available on the market. Non-SME traders have a significant influence on supply chains and play an important role in ensuring that supply chains are deforestation-free. Fairtrade and Satelligence have launched a new partnership to ramp up satellite monitoring of forested areas and farms to all certified coffee and cocoa and producer organisations globally.

The initiative aims to connect Fairtrade cooperatives with data on their members’ farms and their deforestation risks, so the cooperatives can share the data with commercial partners and better manage forest landscapes.

“This partnership focuses on an increasingly important area of trade: access to risk ma…

But Regis Meritan strongly assuaged the fears of cocoa farmers, in both Ghana and Ivory Coast, of any adverse impact of the EUDR on their livelihoods.

ALMA, as part of the Event Horizon Telescope, is unveiling a new image of our Milky Way's supermassive black hole, Sagittarius A*, in which strong magnetic fields can be seen…
The most exciting part is that this hints to a jet that would be hidden from our vantage point in our galaxy… but imagine that! We might be like M87, just at a smaller scale!

Event Horizon Telescope image of Sag A*, the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way galaxy.

The background is mostly black, but a kind of hairy, slightly squashed donut shape in orange can be seen. The central blackness is the shadow of the Sag A*.

The hairy aspect comes from visualising the strength of the magnetic field.
Messier object 87 by Hubble space telescope.
This is the galactic core shown as a composite image of visible and infrared observations in order to resolve the blue jet.
The field of view is about 1.5 arc minutes across, the jet extends to about a third of an arc minute (or 20 arc seconds) with a width of about 2 arc seconds (absolute length 5 kly at a distance of 53 Mly).

However, the next generation of innovators to benefit from this freedom—Google, Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft, Apple et al—saw no reason to extend it to anyone else. When I want my mind blown, I compare former world's largest supercomputers to the tech I have around.
ASCI Red, the world's fastest supercomputer until the year 2000, was 150m² large, consumed 850,000W of power …and was slower than an iPhone 14 Pro, which uses ~6W.

#30DaysOfBiking, Day 22: Originally I planned to ride to the southern lakeside border to Italy, but the bicycle path situation was so bad (1st pic) that I nearly turned around. I then noticed a path into a wildlife sanctuary, the #BolleDiMagadino (

A suddenly ending pedestrian and bicycle path. A traffic jam and road construction site in the distance.
Everglade-like nature reserve. A steep hillside covered with forest in the distance on the right side.
A pedestrian and bicycle path made out of concrete passing through a park with some trees on both sides.
Brompton leaning on a guarding rail at Magadino grass "beach". On the other side of the lake dark green mountains with their tops in clouds and many villages on their lower hillsides. (What's visible is the region between Locarno and Tenero with the one valley cut being the Val Verzasca.)

Apart from an example of when the members of the Commons are insane, last night's debacle showed that you cannot draft a motion, a resolution, on a ceasefire and give due attention to the harms and rights on both sides to the satisfaction of all.
It would require a different kind of process, one which doesn't take place in the House but could in the Committees and Subcommittees and their Working Groups. It still wouldn't satisfy everyone but it might be sane.

Today I was looking for an image of a person being carried on a sedan chair, to illustrate an article I'm writing. When I did a search on on Adobe Stock for "sedan chair", it showed me dozens of pictures of people picking up garbage, and a few pictures of kittens, and nothing else. I found this completely baffling.
Next I went to search the Wikimedia Commons. And it was there I was reminded that another word for "sedan chair" is "litter".

Diane Abbott in her own words
"Over the nearly 40 years that I have been an MP, under any speaker of the House of Commons that I can remember, I would have been called. ... Hester’s abusive comments about me had led the news bulletins that day, and I was referred to several times in PMQs itself."
Her article also refers back to the Forde Report, which documented Labour politicians' horrible comments about her.

I have a recurring annual calendar appointment for March 16. Today is the 102nd anniversary of Comox-Alberni MP A.W. Neill's first speech in his 21 year career in the House of Commons (1921-45).
Neill was a white supremacist, anti-Asian racist, and one of the loudest voices for Japanese Internment. He was also an Indian Agent dealing with First Nations and Residential Schools on Vancouver Island's West Coast.
In 2019 his name was removed from a local school but he remain…
